I show you today Greninja in a shinobi style 忍び (besides we find it in his French name). Greninja is clearly inspired by it, in his name, his poses, his attacks (he throws water shuriken!)... No doubt about it.
Do you know the difference between shinobi 忍び and ninja 忍者 by the way?
Shinobi 忍び is an older term for spies and mercenaries, a term used until the Edo era (17th century). Shinobi 忍び by the way literally means "to sneak". Ninja 忍者 is a more recent word that appeared during the Meiji era (20th century). So the ninja is a modern shinobi of some sort. The nuance is thin I know. The word ninja 忍者 literally means "stealth man". We also find the same kanji 忍 in shinobi 忍び and ninja 忍者 which means secret/sneak/discreet. In fact, ninja 忍者 could be translated into a shadow warrior!
I hope I didn't bore you with my mini Japanese lesson, see you soon!
