Bombirdier (Japanese Crane)

Hey ! Even though Bombirdier is a Pokémon that I think makes most people indifferent, I'm super happy I drew her!
Bombirdier, which is a cross between the stork and the red-crowned crane (tsuru 鶴), has the characteristic of carrying stones and then THROWING THEM AT HIS ENEMIES. The concept is very well transcribed in all her names, in Japanese in particular with her name Otoshidori オトシドリ, a play on words with otoshi 落とし (shedding, fall) and tori 鳥 (bird).

The inspiration from the childbearing stork myth is pretty clear here, except instead of bombing babies it bombards rocks (the first option would have been funnier btw..). So I wanted to replace the rocks with Geodudes, as if she were removing them to raise them.. this idea makes me laugh a lot! 😂

On the other side, the inspiration of the Japanese crane, although less obvious. Already, the colors of Bombirdier fits perfectly to the colors of the animal. We also have the pose on the ground which reminds her well, and her crest on her head is clearly reminiscent of a Japanese fan. The composition of the illustration has been thought out to resemble Japanese prints that depict cranes, often with pine branches and the big red sun.
